Sneak peak in software industry

I was invited as a guest speaker at a local high school  - Bharateeya Vidya Bhavan to talk about software industry. The session was meant for grade 9 and 10 students.
I was in a dilemma as to what can I tell these students. I did not want it to be very technical and wanted it to be informative for them so that it helps them in some way to decide if they want to select software as career.
So I came up with this deck  – Sneak Peak in a Software Industry and talked about the following:
  • —Software industry
    • —What is software?
    • —Types of software
  • —Different career opportunities in Software industry
  • —What do we look for during recruitment?
  • —Typical career graph of a software professional
  • —How do we evaluate our workforce?
  • —How do you get there? + Few sermons
It was interesting to find out that they were already programming in QBasic, Visual Basic + MS Access and all of them had an email account. Almost 5 % of them had already decided that they want to pursue career in software industry.

People are open to Ruby on Rails for their next projects

Off late I had met three prospects who wanted to launch their next projects very soon. After few discussions with them, I proposed Ruby on Rails based solutions to them.
  1. Two of the three have not heard of Ruby on Rails earlier !
  2. The two who did not have idea about RoR, were non-ISV customers
  3. The one who knew what RoR is was pretty much sold to RoR and had almost decided on RoR
  4. The two unaware prospects were excited to know what RoR is and are ready to go back to their think tank and put a solid case for RoR based solution
  5. The two unaware prospects, though had not heard about RoR, were keen on a open source technology based solution
Earlier, I had experiences of people not even wanting to recommend or talk about RoR based solution. Now a days I am seeing welcome change of people being open to new (?)  technology like RoR (provided of course we are able to justify appropriateness of the technology to solve their problem).
Recent hot Indian job market for RoR has really helped me convince my prospects  that there will be RoR developers available to them two/three years down the line for maintenance/sustenance.

Malvan Amboli trip (December 2009)

It was time for vacation this year and we planned a trip to Malvan. We planned a trip Pune-> Malvan -> Amboli -> Kolhapur -> Pune.

We started on the morning of December 26, 2009 from Pune in our newly acquired Ford Fiesta. Took to NH4 towards Kolhapur and reached
Kolhapur in 4 hours with a short break at Virangula restaurant (Bhuinj, just after Khamataki ghat).

We missed the Kolhapur entry point and realized it after 8 kms. Took a U turn and entered Kolhapur from the
Vidhyapeeth road. Then took to the Rakala stand and then to Gagan Bawda road.

After Gagan Bawda, we took the NH17 and started towards Kasal. However, before reaching Kasal, we saw a board
which read "Malvan -> 36 km". We took the road and ...repented. Next 36 kms took us 1.5 hours !
Lesson learned => ask locals before you take a turn, sign boards do not tell you about actual road conditions....

Bookings were taken care of at Hotel Sagar Kinara @ Malvan. It is just next to the Malvan Jetty. Hotel is okay type but
food is definitely good.

HTC touch service center in Pune

I have a HTC touch (bought 1.5 years back) and its touch screen stopped working.

It was a nightmare to find the HTC service center, I spent 2 hours searching for it.

And you know why? It is in a Sony Erricson shop and I was looking for a sign of HTC!!

Any way, if you are in Pune, own a HTC and it is broken and want to give it to authorised service center, here is the address:

It is near to Hotel Tilak off Tilak Road. Search for Vishveshwar Bank near Hotel Tilak, and you'ill see Sony Erricson mobile shop, that's it!

Update:Now the shop has HTC logo on the shop name... and I switched to Nokia E71 recently!

More accurate search for your Outlook inbox

One often needs to search mails. Available options in Outlook do give results but those need not be accurate according to semantics. For example, if I am searching for phone number of 'xyz' and fire outlook search 'xyz phone', I will get results of mails that contains words xyz and phone. This means I will get all those mails where xyz asked for someones phone, or sent someones phone. Also what if phone number is mentioned as cell or mobile ? Existing search will not be able to find it out.Omnifind Personal email search is intelligent enough (or can be "taught" to) understand above scenarios. I have tried this and am more than satisfied with the results.

Finding good school for your kid

Finding a good school for kids is every parent's nightmare. One of my friends asked me what did I do/what insights I gathered while finding a good school from my kid. Here are the points that might help you as well...

  1. Do not neglect any school, try to get and fill as much forms as you can
  2. Timeline for availability of forms . Notices are published in leading news papers(Express/ Sakal etc) around November so start tracking it.
      • Gurukul : Nov 1 week
      • Sevasadan : Dec 1 week
      • Abhinav: after 15 Jan
      • New India : After 15 Jan
      • Symbiosis: Early Jan (I guess it was around 18 Jan but not sure)
      • Bal shikshan : Late Dec/Early Jan
  3. Consider following points while deciding the school
      • Distance of school from your residence
      • Co-education
      • Fees
      • Board/exam pattern (SSC/CBSE etc)
      • Importance of studies vs extra-curricular activities
      • How the teachers behave with children (I did not like it at Rosary, and liked a lot at Gurukul). Students were not afraid of talking to /reaching out to teachers at Gurukul and I did not see a single teacher shouting at the students while I was at the premises at different times.
  4. Be prepared to shell out around Rs. 50K at short notice.
  5. Send your kid to crèche for at least 6 months before you send him/her to proper school
so that (s)he gets some social (survival) training.

I am still alive!!

Was busy off late on the new assignment.

New projects, new people, new technology, Diwali holidays all came at the same time.

It is demanding but interesting phase of life.....
